On a memorable afternoon, a simmering creative vision came to fruition with two talented and cherished waterwomen. From this, my new fine art collection, Môr Noeth or Naked Sea, emerged.
This is my homage to Wales and its splendid sea.
Background and Inspiration
A few years ago, my husband Tom and I spent 3 years living and travelling on our sailing boat. During this time, I started painting with watercolours. Most often, I painted wildlife, whales and underwater scenes. At some point, naked ladies began appearing in my paintings, inspired by our days swimming from the boat, oftentimes naked.
I recently picked up the brushes after a break, and was drawn once more, to painting naked ladies. But I realised I didn’t have any of my own reference photos. Images I found online weren’t quite right, often with the wrong hair or angle.
With the summer ahead of me, I knew just the two ladies to ask to model.
“ I’ve got a proposition for you both. I want to paint a series of watercolours featuring naked ladies from behind. But I need some good reference photos. Would you both be up for a water session to get some photos? Either nudie or semi-nudie, what do you say?"
Libby's reply, "100% in for this...sounds brilliant, silly and watery fun."
Jordan's reply, "Defo up for this. Although, can I please request we go when the sea is at its warmest 🥶😅"
And so a plan was made, and one of the most memorable days of the summer came to pass.
From a kernel of creativity, an unexpected collection of fine art emerged. No paints needed.
The Collection
Môr Noeth celebrates the power and beauty of the feminine in its most natural form. To be naked in the sea, we become the naked sea. It is an act of surrender that transforms and releases us from our anxieties and expectations. Through immersion, our bodies are held weightless. We feel connected to every atom rippling outwards. We are the sea.
"To be naked in the sea, we become the naked sea."
These images are an invitation to reflect on who we are when all is stripped back. Time in nature and the ocean allows us to do this. That is its gift to us. May we each find it in our hearts to guard the sea with the urgency of protecting a loved one.
